Response to letter of 21 Feb 1910 from Samuel Roland Dishman requesting genealogical information. Letter states that she is sister of W. L. Dishman and that he is dead, that she is 60 years old, and the only one of her family still living. She states her mother told her that she had an uncle John Thornton Dishman who left Essex County in 1848 on board a ship for California and was never heard from again. She also states that her two grandfathers were brothers named David and Samuel, and that they had two other brothers named John and James that went South.

Response to letter of 20 Feb 1916 from Samuel Roland Dishman to Mrs W. L. Dishman requesting genealogical information. He states that Mrs. W. L. Dishman is an old lady and that she asked him to respond on her behalf. He states that Slaughter Wilson Dishman and two other men left Essex County in 1848 or 1850 with a vessel load of slaves bound for California or some other point out west. They were never heard from again. He also states that there are two old ex-slaves, 95 to 100 years old, living near him that used to be owned by the Dishman family that should have som einformation about the family.

Response to letter of 6 Mar 1916 from James B. Farmer. S. R. Dishman requests that Farmer try and obtain additonal informatin about the family of Slaughter Dishman and encourages him to get affidavits from the ex-slaves that belonged to the Dishman family. He mentions that he is in contact with another Dishman family regarding the Slaughter Dishman claim. He also mentins that he has been working on the estate of a Slaughter Dishman Pinkard.
  • [S1223] Letter from James B. Farmer (Essex County, Virginia) to S. R. Dishman, 20 Mar 1916; S.R. Dishman Papers (copies held by William Keith Dishman) (Johns Creek, Georgia). Response to letter of 11 Mar 1916 from Samuel Roland Dishman inquiring about Slaughter Dishman. States that he spoke with the old ex-slaves of the Dishman family and they recall that Slaughter Dishman had a brother named John Thornton Dishman and only one of the brothers left on the boat for California. They disagreed on which brother actually left on the boat but said the other brother died in the Civil War. He said that four men left on the boat: one Dishman, one Gray, one Garreth, and a Captain Pinkard. Slaughter had ten children, four boys named James, John Thornton, Slaughter Wilson, and David Jr, and six girls named Selina, Isabella [Arabella], Emily, Sidney, Mary, and Betsey [Elizabeth]. James married Eliza Clarke of Essex County, the other three did not marry. Selina married Hiram Gouldman, Isabella married Edmund Pilkilton, Emily married Ases Gouldman, Sidney married Absalom Gouldman, Mary married William W. Dishman, and Betsey [Elizabeth] died without ever marrying. Their father David Dishman married a Miss Reynolds and their grandfather was also named David. Grandfather David had two brothers named Sample and John.
